How I got into breeding Russian Blues...
I am thankful to my parents that we grew up with a lot of animals. We kept rabbits, dogs, cats, hens and all sorts of small ammals. When I was 8 years old, I desperately wanted a goose. A year and many discussions later, I got my Toulouse-goose "Federli", with the clear understanding that nobody but me would have any work with. She slept in my bed and followed me around all day. After a couple of false starts, I even got her to use a cat toilet and thus she became house-trained. When Federli died, I for a very long time, did not want another animal. Finally, three years later, I was ready to form a new bond with an animal. This time it was our other cat "Flöhli" which stole a way into my heart. She was a very loving cat and also shared my bed. When she had kittens, we were all very excited and happy. But two days later, she didn't come home. My mother and I took over looking after the young ones and feeding them on a 2h-routine. College and apprentiship came and went. Once my formal education was over, I moved away from home. Installed in my first own home, I immediately looked around for an animal to share it with ... or two. First, Bajazzo came into my life. A short while later Ya-Shi-La followed. Both are Persians.
I was on and off contemplating getting into breeding. I read a lot about various breeds and what it meant to breed. It was clear to me, that I did not want to breed Persians although they are beautiful. But I just could not make up my mind between the other breeds. So many of them were fascinating and beautiful! But as fate has its ways, "Doolittle", a Russian Blue Mix, desperately needed a home and it was mine he came to. All of a sudden, it became quite clear, what breed I wanted to get into. So I started to read a lot about Russian Blues, as well as informing myself about British Shorthairs. This cemented my decision: I needed to find a Russian Blue girl.
First, though, I had to get rid of my 850l aquarium with its myrad of rare fishes. I am sure, if I did not get rid of it, my cats certainly would have! Luckily, I found a good home for all the fish with the aquarium. In November 2002, Jasmina v Hirschbach is move in my home and from then on, one thing gave way to the next...
Breeding is my main hobby, which takes up most of my time. Of course, it gives me also a lot in return. I don't draw any profit from my cats because I put too much value on treating my cats well and fulfilling quality in the way the cats are kept and treated.
Our home
All our cats live in our family and may, if we are at home, also use the pet-fanced garden. Our kittens live in the family and allowed to move freely in the house. The only difference from the majors is that they do not belong in the garden because it would be simply too dangerous.
Our studs (boys) live separated from the girls in a male area, where they have a heated indoor envroiment with cat door to the secure outside kennel.
We attach great importance to the welfare of our animals and feed our cats mainly with supplemented fresh meat. Of course, it has everywhere cat toys and scratching posts for the cats, so that they can enjoy live during our absence. That cats can be sometimes alone, we find very important. Since we are fully employed our cats soon learn from an early age, that man is not 24 hours a day at home.
We love our cats and they can nearly do everything they want. Sleeping in our bed is very common but even we love them, we also train them in important points. They learn that our meat is not for cats, plants aren't toys and cats has to use the cat-toilett of course. So they know that they are boss but we humans veto-rights.
For the other animals living with us will be ensured the best possible way and we try to offer everyone a great life and species-appropriate environment.
Our vet is not close to our home but he is the best one we know. Since 2003 he enjoys our confidence and we have built a great working relationship with him. His expertise but also his absolute honesty and realistic assessments are very important to us.

My breeding aims
I want my cattery to fulfil the highest quality standards. This is why I'm supporting the aim to create a neutral and independent certification for catteries that describes clearly how cats should be breed and raised to ensure the animal's happiness and well-being. However, as long as this certification isn't official yet, we strive to fulfil our own high quality standards. These being:
Certificates of Quality
We are especially proud of the receipt of all known quality certificates for catteries. Ruskis got follow quality certificates:
Q-Cat Certified (CH), since 2006
CFA Cattery of Excellence (USA), since 2005
TICA Outstanding Cattery (USA), since 2005
These quality certificates will receive a cattery only if it is professional cared. The review takes place by a licenced veterinarian on anual base (for all american certificates). For the Swiss certificate the review takes place by trained auditors in the two-year rhythm.
Criteria for obtaining such certificates is in addition to the hygienic situation and the space, employment opportunities, expertise and the books of the grower guide.
There are detailed rules about space, care and rearing. More information about the Swiss certificate Q-Cat, please visit www.q-cat.ch
This Veterinary below knows us personaly and in min. once per year they visit us to make sure that all is fine and to gives us support in what we could do better. They also fillin the quality reports for TICA and CFA yearly. We are very proud and absolutly happy to have such good veterinar on our site, allways, and if it's realy needed 24h per day:

The Russian Blue Cat
Appearance
The Russian blue is a fine-boned cat with a long, firm, muscular body that is lithe and graceful without being tubular after the fashion of Oriental breeds. The Russian's head is a smooth, medium wedge, neither long and tapering nor short and massive. The muzzle is blunt without an exaggerated whisker break. The top of the skull is long and flat in profile, descending gently to a point just above the eyes and continuing at a slight downward angle in a straight line to the tip of the medium-length nose. There is no stop or nose break, and the length of the nose should be shorter than the length of the line from the top of the skull to the eyes. Wide-set, vivid-green eyes, at least one eye width apart, confer a broad look to the Russian blue's face. The eyes, according to most observers, should be round, or just oval enough to show [an] oriental slant.
Large ears - wide at the base, and more pointed than rounded - crown the Russian blue head. The ears are set far apart, as much on the side of the head as on the top.
The Russian blue has a short, dense, fine double coat that stands out from the body. In a double coat the two outermost layers of hair - the guard hairs and the awn hairs - are the same length. Normally guard hairs are longer than awn hairs, which, in turn, are longer than down hairs. An even, bright blue throughout, the soft, silky coat has silver- tipped guard hairs that give the Russian blue a shimmering, lustrous appearance.
The Character
The typical reaction of a Russian kitten is to run to a safe location, usually behind a piece of furniture, and to there review all the implications of any new development. If you wish to establish a relationship at this point, sit down, quietly dangle a shoelace or
move a cat teaser back and forth slowly and wait. Soon the Russian will be unable to ignore the motion and will carefully attempt to capture the moving object. From that point on negotiations toward a more serious relationship will be in order.
This very typical Russian Blue "look before you leap" characteristic reinforces that Russians are a very intelligent breed. Aside from the fact that the Russian Blue will have gained considerable play time from
you at your first meeting he will also have determined just how interested you are in getting to know him. If you have little patience for his game and "wait and see" attitude then perhaps you would not have been the totally committed new owner that he is seeking.
Russians don't like change. They are a long-lived, hardy breed of cat. If they come to stay, they expect to stay a long time and be treated as a valued member of your family. Lots of cat toys (Russians remain eager to play throughout their lives), no loud music and meals on time suit a Russian to a tee. See, I told you Russians were smart! Russian Blues are clever and extremely agile. They love small spaces and can fit themselves into areas that you would not believe could make a cat feel comfortable.
Perhaps the Russian Blue's unique personality and demand for individual attention have played a part in keeping the number of Russian Blue breeders relatively small. Russian breeders are very protective of their cats. Russians do not do well in cat households with large numbers. Socialization of young kittens is absolutely essential. The Russian must be in full agreement with a breeder's desire for his or her show career or it will be a no go situation.

Cat care and maintenance
An animal is not a disposable product!
Time and responsibility
Cats need love, attention and care. This also applies to release prisoners and for multi-cat households! Think before you buy if you want to invest the necessary time. An animal holding means to take over responsibility. At the beginning of each network of relationships is the enthusiasm. Think about whether you can live with cat hair. If you have allergies, you should have an allergy test before purchasing a cat do an allergy test. Remember that a cat lives good 15-18 + years.
Financial and premises
Each animal maintenance costs. The annual vet check costs and may even be times that your cat is ill. You should already be aware that this can go hand in hand with financial burdens. Cats also need some space, a 18m3 large studio just does not fit two cats. But you can certainly set up with a little imagination, a cat paradise in a slightly smaller apartment. Many ideas can be found on the Internet, for example, an "Catwalk" .
Basic equipment
Basic equipment for a cat's budget include:
Outdoor or indoor cats
At this point, opinions are divided. Many breeders sell purebred cats generally do indoor keeping only. Animals that have never had clearance and grow exclusively in the flat, do not miss the free transition and still be happy. Many domestic cats in animal shelters looking quite desperately for a new home where they can be outdoor cats, cat breeders shouldn't competition them. Nature is something exciting and beautiful, but it robs the normal life expectancy of most cats. Many are run over by a hunter shot and killed by predators. Ruskis are indoor cats only!
Single cats
The rumor that cats are solitary, was actually disproved long time ago. Unfortunately, those rumors last a long time and are hard to get out of the heads of the people. I repeat to make it clear, cats depend very much on social encounters with other cats. Without this they will suffer! According to Swiss Animal Protection Law, an single attitude is forbidden if the animal is more than 6 hours a day left alone.
Ruskis live in the group and will not be sold as single cat. You have to be willing either to keep two Ruskis or another cat for animal Society of the Ruskis.
Feed
The best food for cats were mice, but of course this is not really practical, but we can empathize with the mouse. This type of feeding called B.A.R.F. However, there is a confusing amount of industrially produced animal food. Many cat owners look only at the specified price, it is precisely this very misleading. The best indication of the quality of the food is the required daily ration. This should less than 100g per day and animal. Also belongs neither cereals (wheat, corn) or other vegetable products to first place in the summaries.
Cats are carnivores, no vegetarians!
B.A.R.F.
What is the B.A.R.F. called out to tender Biologically Welfare Raw Food and refers to a very special kind of cat feeding. Earlier, when there was no food industry was the feeding method widely used but also very expensive since culled some minerals and vitamins, calcium etc and the meat had to be added. Recently, B.A.R.F. demand than ever, especially because lifestyle diseases such as renal insufficiency, gingivitis and calculus, diabetes, and more increasingly problems. Many of these diseases can be controlled by switching to BARF-food quality, some even completely cured.
Basic idea
The cat is a carnivore and prey species are eaten raw. Consequently, the whole organism of the animal in this type of food is directed.
Prejudices and old wives' tale
Since there are so many information that it would blow up the capacity of this home page. But we will corrected the most important:
Too much protein is unhealthy for the cat and pollutes the kidneys.
Dry food cleans the teeth and prevents tartar.
One should never feed them raw meat because it contains bacteria and parasites.

The same approach is recommended for washing machines, dryers or dish washers prefer to look too much as the start button pressed too early.

Who can blame cats that they are new-greedy immensely to the outside world and that air is blowing into it through the turn window, a magical exercises to-power relationship. It becomes dangerous if the climber slips into the gap of a Kippfensters the chest and fatally trapped. Watering cans
The thirst is great - the water dish empty. Why not take a sip as the watering can? to prevent the four-legged darlings do just that and remain fatally stuck in the can, it is important to leave it always fully filled. In addition, fertilizer additions have lost nothing in the flower water.
Plants
Just kittens and older animals love to nibble on houseplants. Toxic copies should therefore in a "Büsi budget" as much space available as sharp-edged plants, the neck and throat can hurt the cats. Specifically, you should also watch out for bunches of flowers that look with sharp-edged grass indeed beautiful, but the grass is so sharp that it is slashing the cat inside.
Rubber bands and Co.
Popular, but also treacherous cat toys, rubber bands, gift and shoelaces and cords, cord, wool and thread. The animals can become entangled in it and thereby tie their limbs off. There is also a risk of ingestion Magenverschlingung or intestinal obstruction. Therefore, it is necessary to stow these utensils in a "cat safe place."
Toxic substances and swallowed objects
should also be kept under lock and all toxic substances such as chemical building products, insecticides, medicines and Grillanzündflüssig-speeds. No less critical are swallowed objects such as paper clips, pins, toys glued or sewn-on materials and in many places beloved Christmas decorations.
This list is far from complete. Please take a look around the internet or read books about cats attitude. These are only the häuffigsten cause of death in cats.
